It is the eleventh Star Trek series and was launched in 2022 as part of Kurtzman's expanded Star Trek Universe. Kirk was the captain the Enterprise needed and not just because continuity demanded it.Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is an American television series created by Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet for the streaming service Paramount+. For as great of a captain as Christopher Pike is, James T. Once the metaphorical trigger was pulled, it was already too late. You can't un-annihilate the planet after nuclear war. Yet, as an allegory of the Cold War, it works. Viewers own star-mileage may vary when analyzing the dilemma posed in this finale. ![]() For better or worse, the aggressive (for Starfleet) ideology of Kirk helped prevent a war at the cost of the lives of a crew of Romulans whose actions were in violation of a treaty. ![]() This is why he gets the 'false fleet' to help facilitate negotiations and, as it does in the episode, provide cover for escape if needed. He and Pike want to negotiate from even footing, but Kirk understands that the only place to negotiate from is a place of strength. The Romulans also have their own version of this conflict, with a younger officer countermanding the older captain who is receptive to Pike's overtures. Yet, his gut instincts and certainty of his convictions make the type of man of action able to deliver the kind of "proportionate response" required to keep the peace with an aggressive neighbor. He is a good man, as the end of The Undiscovered Country proves when Kirk saves the peace treaty with the Klingons. Kirk, however, believes in his own righteousness almost to the point of it being a flaw. He listens, takes suggestions, and even puts some command decisions to an unofficial vote. Pike is the type of person who never believes that he has all the answers. Ironically it was brash and impulsive Kirk who was the man the moment needed. Pike is a great captain, but "A Quality of Mercy" suggests that he was just the wrong captain for the moment. He didn't want war, but he knew that a strong offense can be the only defense against those enemies who desperately want conflict. This story underlines that Kirk's point-of-view was necessary in the various Cold War allegories in The Original Series timeline. Not destroying the Bird of Prey may have been Pike's mistake, but the galaxy could not survive without James T. Yet, because of Kirk's suspicion, he is able to save the day by sacrificing his own life. Not only does he defer to Pike's authority, he respects his intention. This is not a critique of Kirk as a Captain or person, by the way. All of it could be avoided, it seems, if Kirk blows up the Romulan Bird of Prey without wimpy ol' Pike whingeing about "peace" this and "diplomacy" that. This leads to a war that lasts decades and kills billions or even trillions of people. However, the Romulans only see this attempt at dialogue as a sign of weakness. Pike, in what seems like the 'right' thing to do, does not choose to kill this attack vessel but use it as a way to start a discussion for peace. Rather than the Klingons, it is the mysterious Romulan Empire that threatens the peace. Wesley's Kirk has none of this baggage, yet his instincts are already pointing him in this direction. "Don’t believe them," he says, "Don't trust them. Kirk, especially after the Klingons killed his son in Wrath of Khan, is hard-pressed to accept this. The Federation and the Klingons are set to sign a peace treaty, but entrenched forces on both sides try to sabotage this meeting. This film brilliantly juxtaposes the end of the Cold War, the dominant military and political threat of the 20th Century, with the end of the runs for The Original Series cast. Instead of the series, we need to consider William Shatner's Kirk in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
